Notes:-

South and South West InterGroup Meeting, Sunday 5th April

The Kicking Donkey, Brokerswood, Westbury, Wiltshire BA13 4EG. From 12.00 onwards. See www.kickingdonkey.net. Tel: 01373 823250

Chilterns will be organising a run down the Brokerswood. Contact Peter Bowden if you are interested in joining us.

A message from the organisers:-

Invited Groups: The South and South West Groups of the TR Register - Brunel TR's, Kennet Valley, Chiltern, Glavon, South Glamorgan, Vale of White Horse, Wessex, Wye Dean, Y Ddraig Goch, Apple County, Channel Island TRs, Cornwall, Devon and Dorset

This is the venue that we visited last year for the South West season opener on a day that started off considerably snowy and understandably reduced the attendance from the farther afield local groups. Nevertheless the pub made us very welcome indeed and ticked all the right boxes i.e. good beer, good food, a large car park and a good atmosphere.  We have therefore decided to return for what we hope will become an annual fixture on the TR calendar.

The plan is to meet up at the Kicking Donkey from 12am onwards for lunch or just a drink followed in the afternoon with a run to a local place of interest. It is not confirmed at the moment but likely to be to the National Trust village of Lacock.

Please see the pub website for location and directions. The pub has requested that we give them some idea of numbers eating and it is preferable if individuals contact the pub direct to confirm a booking, just mention the TR Meeting. The menu is also on the website.

We very much look forward to seeing you there. If you have any questions or require further details please do not hesitate to contact us.

Regards

Andy

"Drive it Day", Sunday 26th April

This is an initiative by the Federation of Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC), and others, to promote the classic car movement and raise public awareness. The idea is that anyone with a roadworthy classic should make the effort to use it on that day. The Chiltern Group has arranged a run to the Transport Museum in Coventry. We will meeting up in a couple of convenient places and run up to Coventry together, taking a scenic route and avoiding the motorways. Once there, we will be able to park in a privileged spot, right by the entrance, so we will need to know numbers a week in advance so that we can ensure there are sufficient spaces available. We will also take the opportunity to visit the Standard Triumph monument. Ron Rumens has made all the arrangements. If you would like to join us, speak to either Ron or myself.

Peter Bowden

Hi,
For the Drive it Day trip to Coventry Museum of Transport on 26th April, I propose the following:-

Meet at the Esso petrol station at the "top" of the A41 near Bicester at 09:30, for 09:45 departure.
(to explain to myself, this is where the A41 turns left for the M40, near Bicester Village)

At 09:45, we will depart towards the centre of Bicester, and pick up the B4100 for Souldern, Aynho, Adderbury and Banbury.

At Adderbury, turn right on to the A4260, and continue straight ahead down to Banbury Cross, and again straight ahead.
Just after Banbury Cross, the road rises slightly, and there is a cinema and a hotel on the left. If Geoff & Simon prefer not to divert to Bicester, this could be a good place to wait for us coming through between 10:00 and 10:15.

Continue straight ahead, down through traffic lights, and through a commercial area to join the A423 signposted Southam.
Continue on the A423, past Southam, and eventually join the A45, A46 near Coventry.

You will be naturally turned towards Birmingham for a short distance, but soon can pick up a signpost for Coventry City Centre A4114.

Follow the city centre signs for approx. 2 miles, when you meet the inner ring road. The Transport Museum is very well signposted (brown signs) from before the ring road, and hopefully there will not be a lot of traffic on Sunday. The signposts are frequent and the distance is very short, but we should end up right by the entrance to the staff car park.

Entrance to the museum is free, and there is a cafe serving drinks & snacks. As the museum is right in the city centre, there is a range of pubs and cafes in walking distance.

The museum covers the whole range of transport built in Coventry, which was the home of the bicycle and motor cycle as well as Humber, Triumph and Jaguar.

We should have arrive at approx. 11:00, and I presume our departure time will depend a lot on the weather.
If the weather is fine, I propose leaving at about 3pm to visit the Triumph monument, which is 3.2 miles away. and should take 7 minutes according to Multimap.
When we carried out our "recce" there were a lot of roads up in the city centre, ad we were unable to follow the instructions. Notes we made were to look for the Ramada Hotel, the Dragon Chinese Buffet, IKEA, Tile Hill, Earlsdon area and Knowle B4101.
The Triumph Monument is on the B4101, at the part where it is called "Herald Avenue" It should be on the right and is very easy to miss, although the road names do give a clue Dolomite Avenue and Renown avenue both lead off Herald avenue in the vicinity.

The Triumph monument is only just off the A45, so I suggest turning left along the A45 for a short distance, then right at the traffic lights for Kenilworth on the A429.
At Kenilworth, turn left on the A452 and follow to M40 junction 13.
Instead of going on to the M40, continue on the B4100, which is the old A41 which continues down to Banbury.
This was a good A road, which now has no traffic because it is parallel to the M40. An additional advantage is, that being Drive it Day, there may well be a fair few classics around who have visited Gaydon.

I hope the above is clear.

Any problems, pleas ring me on 01844 21 25 73, or 07977371949

Chiltern Group Summer BBQ, Saturday 8th August

I’m pleased to confirm that this year our summer BBQ will be located on the Gardiners Arms at Tackley. This is a well managed country pub in the pretty village of Tackley near Kidlington.  Our hosts, Katy and Paul Tyrrell, offer some nice ale, a good sized car park and a function room for our exclusive use during the event.

For entertainment we will have a traditional skittle ally, an Aunt Sally and supervised archery. We will endeavour to incorporate these activities into a fun competition which will set teams of girls against the boys to settle, once and for all, the age old issue of superiority!!!!  Clearly this is an event that you simply cannot afford to miss (there will be prizes).

We have booked this for Saturday 8th August to commence at around 3.00pm with the BBQ being served at around 7.00pm. Directions for the Gardiners Arms are attached. Also attached is the BBQ menu which I hope you will agree looks very scrummy. Unlike last year, you’ll not be asked to provide a preference for food so if you go hungry you’ll only have yourself to blame.

Please support your Group by your attendance and let me have your bookings (guests are welcome) as quickly as possible. The cost this year is £13.50 per head (which includes a Group contribution of £1.50) and I will be grateful to have your cheques, payable to The TR Register (Chiltern Group) when you book.  I’ve added my address below for your convenience but otherwise catch me if you can at a mid-monthly meeting.

Finally, if you wish to form a team (5 or 6 participants) then please make sure that you book your attendance together (otherwise I’ll form teams randomly as bookings are received) and let me have your team name.

As always, if you have any queries or my explanation is impenetrable then don’t hesitate to contact me.

Here’s to a great TR season and another successful summer event.

Best regards

Roger Alderton

Cowley Classic Car Show, Sunday 16th August

Here's an event we are trying to raise local interest in.  No doubt there will be plenty of MGs there so some TRs would be a welcome sight.

Cowley Classic Car Show, on Sunday, August 16th 2009 at the Lord Nuffield Club in Oxford. Initially devised by the Rotary Club as a charity show to feature cars built in Oxford, Cowley and Abingdon, but now open to all makes and models. Last year, a fine day produced a bigger than expected turn-out of cars and spectators for their first ever show in the heart of the Cowley car manufacturing area. Further details and entry form from Carole Hathaway at carole.hathaway@tesco.net.
